V. Abdur Rahim was born in the small town of <\/span>Vaniyambadi<\/span> in the state of Tamil Nadu, <\/span>India<\/span> in 1933. After finishing his secondary school studies, he joined <\/span>Presidency<\/span> College<\/span>, <\/span>University<\/span> of <\/span>Madras<\/span> where he majored in English Language and Literature. He graduated in 1957. In 1964, he joined <\/span>al-Azhar<\/span> University<\/span>, <\/span>Cairo<\/span>, where he did his M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Arabic Philology.<\/span><\/h3>\nIt is to be noted that Abdur Rahim learnt Arabic by himself at the early stages. The school where he did his secondary school studies offered Arabic, but the lessons it offered consisted of only memorizing the conjugation tables. Abdur Rahim detested this method.\u00a0 He thought that it was the most unnatural way of learning a language. Only dead languages like Latin, Syriac, etc. are taught this way. Living languages teach sentences straightaway. He decided to design a curriculum to teach Arabic to non-native speakers of Arabic.<\/span><\/h3>\nIn 1969, he joined the Islamic University of Madinah to teach Arabic Philology. Here, he was also associated with the Programme of teaching Arabic as a foreign language. The course he designed for this purpose is now known as \u00a0 <\/span>\u062f\u0631\u0648\u0633\u064f<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0644\u063a\u0629\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0628\u064a\u0629\u0650 \u0644\u0640\u063a\u064a\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0637\u0642\u064a\u0646 \u0628\u0640\u0647\u0627<\/strong><\/span> Dur\u00fbs al-Lughah al-\u2018Arabiyyah\u00a0 li-Ghair al-N\u00e2tiq\u00eena Bih\u00e2.<\/span><\/em> (Now these books are popularly known throughout the world as \u201cMADINAH BOOKS\u201d.)<\/span><\/h3>\nWhen he was learning Arabic by himself, Abdur Rahim studied the many problems that beset the non-native students of Arabic, and tried to solve them. He discovered that all these problems can easily be solved by applying the principle of taqd\u00eem al- us\u00fbl \u2018ala al-fur\u00fb\u2018<\/span><\/em>, i.e. teaching the primary elements before the secondary elements. The following are some of the manifestations of the application of this principle:<\/span><\/h3>\n1.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>Teaching the primary case-endings before the secondary endings, so you teach the masr\u00fbf <\/span><\/em>noun before the mamn\u00fb\u2018 min al-sarf,<\/span><\/em> and\u00a0the al-af\u2018\u00e2l al-arba\u2018ah <\/span><\/em>before the al-af\u2018\u00e2l al-khamsah.<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>2.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>Teaching the s\u00e2lim <\/span><\/em>verb before the other categories.<\/span>
\n3<\/span><\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Teaching\u00a0 the al-mud\u00e2ri\u2018 al-marf\u00fb<\/span><\/em> \u2018 before the al-mud\u00e2ri\u2018 al-mans\u00fbb <\/span><\/em>or al-mud\u00e2ri\u2018 al-majz\u00fbm<\/span><\/em>.
\n<\/span>4<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Teaching the plural of intelligent nouns before that of non-intelligent nouns.<\/span><\/h3>\nAnother principle Abdur Rahim advocates is that rules of waqf<\/span><\/em> should not be applied during the teaching stage, for in that case the student cannot learn the correct ending of the last word in the sentence as, ma smu-<\/span><\/em>ka<\/span><\/em> and ma smu-<\/span><\/em><\/span>ki<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/em> for example,\u00a0are both reduced to ma smu-<\/span><\/em>k<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n
